Quota attainment looks simple—credited performance divided by assigned quota—but the rollup can become misleading when quotas use different periods, currencies, measures, territories, or credit rules. Salesforce guidance treats quotas as targets assigned for forecast periods and users, while quota design should connect to broader sales capacity and goals. This lesson builds the calculation from the rep-period level upward so a team percentage cannot hide missing quotas or incompatible measures.

VISUAL LESSON

What you will learn

  1. 01Define the quota-attainment grain.
  2. 02Build a compatible hierarchy rollup.
  3. 03Audit changes, exceptions, and coverage.
Representative quota and credited sales records roll into manager and company attainment while preserving exceptions
A fair quota rollup adds compatible credited performance and quota amounts; it does not average rep percentages.

ILLUSTRATIVE WORKED EXAMPLE

Calculate an illustrative team rollup

Rep A attainment120% at the rep level
$120k / $100k
Rep B attainment67% at the rep level
$80k / $120k
Rep C attainment85% at the rep level
$85k / $100k
Team attainment89%, not the average of percentages
$285k / $320k
Illustrative example—not a benchmark. Replace every sample value with your own campaign, market, and measurement data.

PRACTICAL INTERFACE MAP

Build the rollup from atomic records

Grain01Create one rep-period-measure row

Join the effective quota, credited actual, currency, territory, manager path, and rule version for the same grain.

Math02Aggregate compatible amounts

Calculate rep attainment, then sum credited actuals and quotas for manager levels instead of averaging percentages.

Audit03Expose coverage and exceptions

Show missing quotas, transfers, leaves, split credit, currency conversion, late adjustments, and version dates beside the rollup.

Conceptual walkthrough. Labels, controls, and availability can vary by account, region, plan, and interface version; verify the current screen before acting.

THE LEAD ATLAS METHOD

Lead Atlas Data can provide a done-for-you business-contact list tailored to sales territories, business categories, locations, and campaign markets, helping teams create clearly scoped prospecting inputs without treating list volume as quota attainment.See how custom list research works ↗
01

Define the atomic calculation

Set the grain to salesperson, quota period, quota measure, currency, and effective territory or role. Record the assigned quota, credited actual, attainment formula, cap or floor if any, and rule version. Separate revenue, units, bookings, margin, pipeline, and activity quotas.

Do not calculate attainment when the quota is missing, zero for an unknown reason, in another measure, or outside the effective period. Use explicit exception states instead of converting missing data into zero or 100 percent.

02

Align quota and credited performance

Join quota and actuals using effective dates, credit ownership, period, measure, and currency. Resolve split credit, overlays, team selling, returns, cancellations, renewals, late bookings, and reassignment according to documented compensation or reporting policy.

Keep native currency and the approved converted currency with rate source and date. Do not compare a quarterly quota with month-to-date actuals without a clearly labeled pacing view distinct from final attainment.

03

Roll up the hierarchy correctly

At manager, region, or company level, sum compatible credited actuals and compatible quota amounts, then divide the totals. Do not average rep attainment percentages because different quota sizes would receive equal weight.

Use the effective management hierarchy for the reporting period, not only today's org chart. Preserve manager path, transfer date, vacant territories, new hires, leaves, and quota relief decisions so historical reports can be reproduced.

04

Add coverage and fairness diagnostics

Publish quota coverage, actual coverage, number of reps, number missing quota, distribution of attainment, median, concentration, ramp cohort, territory potential, and exceptions beside the top-line percentage. Segment by role or measure before comparing groups.

Review whether changes in territory, lead supply, product availability, seasonality, or data processing create systematic differences. The rollup can surface a question; it does not by itself prove effort, skill, or fairness.

05

Govern versions and decisions

Lock period snapshots, log quota edits and credit adjustments with author, reason, approval, before-and-after values, and effective date. Define which report is operational, compensation-related, or executive so late changes do not silently alter every use case.

Deliverable: grain definition, quota and credit rulebook, effective-dated hierarchy, currency policy, rep calculation table, manager rollup, coverage panel, exception queue, version and adjustment log, reconciliation sample, and signed reporting calendar.

THE TAKEAWAY

Calculate attainment only at a consistent person-period-measure grain, preserve quota and credit versions, aggregate numerator and denominator rather than averaging percentages, and publish exceptions beside every management rollup.
