FTC guidance says endorsements should make material connections obvious and disclosures should be hard to miss, understandable, and placed with the endorsement. Free products, discounts, employment, family relationships, and payment can all matter. This lesson converts that principle into a practical pre-publication review.

A sponsored social post passes through relationship, placement, clarity, and approval checks
A disclosure works only when the audience can notice and understand the relationship while seeing the endorsement.

01

Identify the material connection

Ask what the endorser received and what relationship exists with the brand: money, free or discounted product, employment, ownership, family, travel, services, affiliate compensation, or another benefit. Do not assume the audience already knows.

Create a relationship field in the brief and require a yes, no, or needs-review answer with detail. The legal reviewer should decide edge cases; the creator should not hide them in casual shorthand.

02

Use plain, accurate language

The explanation should let an ordinary viewer understand that the content is advertising or that the creator has a relationship with the brand. Avoid vague abbreviations or gratitude that does not explain the connection.

Match the disclosure language to the language of the endorsement. Keep the factual claim and disclosure separate enough to understand but close enough to be noticed together.

03

Place it where people see it

FTC guidance warns against disclosures that appear only on a profile, at the end, after a 'more' expansion, or inside a crowded hashtag block. Review the first visible screen on the actual device.

For image, story, video, and live content, check on-screen duration, contrast, size, audio, caption, and repetition where appropriate. A built-in tool may help but should not replace the full clarity review.

04

Check the endorsement itself

Confirm the creator's real experience, claim evidence, limitations, price or offer accuracy, required warnings, and the absence of invented results. A disclosure does not make a false or unsupported claim acceptable.

Link each material claim to a source or approved product fact. Reject testimonials that imply typical outcomes the business cannot support.

05

Archive and monitor

Save the approved post, caption, media, disclosure wording, platform tool state, date, reviewer, agreement, and URL after publication. Monitor edits, reposts, clips, and live variations that could remove the disclosure context.

Deliverable: connection inventory, disclosure language, device preview, claim evidence, format checklist, approval record, live monitoring owner, correction path, and campaign-specific contact brief.

THE TAKEAWAY

Disclose the real relationship in clear language at the point of endorsement, adapt the disclosure to image, video, and live formats, and preserve the review evidence.
